Misconceptions about SEO

You know what SEO is, your boss knows it, your client knows it, heck, even your granny knows what SEO is. Well, that was a little farfetched but you get my point. We all think we understand how SEO fully works, but that’s far from the truth. To be honest, nobody fully knows how Google’s algorithm works regarding SEO. That being said, we can still have an educated guess of how it will work for our product.

In this blog, I’ll be talking about how SEO works and what are the misconceptions about it. All of the information that I’ll be sharing is related to Google but I’ll still talk about other search engines for a better perspective about SEO.

Let’s start with explaining what SEO is and how it can be useful for your brand

Tweaks and actions taken against a website and/or search engines to make it appear on the highest possible rank on the result list of a related search query. Now that you know what SEO is, there are two ways of doing SEO for a website, one is legitimate and the other is not. The legitimate one is called White hat and the other is called Black hat. SEO if done properly can be very beneficial to your website.

Let’s talk about the misconceptions now.

SEO means fast results.

This is probably the most common misconception about SEO, people often think SEO is some kind of magic and once you do it, your site will magically be on the top of Google’s search engine results. But in reality, SEO is a long and continuous process, you need to be patient and consistent to see results, and often the results are not what you expected.

The More Keywords, The Better!

Everyone talks about keywords when it comes to SEO but what is a Keyword and are more keywords better for your website? In terms of SEO, they’re the words and phrases that searchers enter into search engines, also called “search queries”. No matter how many keywords you stuff on your website, until and unless the keywords are relevant and most importantly they are relevant to the content you are posting only then will Google reward your website if the keywords are not relevant, Google’s algorithm will detect that and ban your website or at least will rank you lower according to Google stuffing your website with unnecessary keywords is a black hat technique.

Tips regarding Keywords

You want your keyword density to stay below 3%. Keywords should be placed in the copy where they fit and flow naturally. Don’t force keywords on the page just to try to get your page to rank.

You can ignore your Title and Metatags

People often ignore optimizing the title because they spend too much time focusing on the content but the title of your website is equally important as your content, if not more. Optimizing it with relevant keywords is an absolute necessity if you want good results. Metatags are also very important for a good ranking.

Tips regarding Title and Metatags.

Your title tag should be no more than 60 characters. Your meta description should be no more than 160.

Your title tag and meta should include your core keyword.

You don’t need to create content often.

So you create content like blogs and post them once in a while, your content is very good according to you but you still are not getting the ranking you want, do you know the answer to that? It’s because you don’t create content often. Creating content regularly is very necessary, as it can lead to a good SEO ranking.

Tips regarding content creation.

Using a content calendar will help you stay on top of how often you’re publishing content. It will enable you to keep track of when you create content and when you’re set to publish it.

Blogging is one of the most effective ways to drive traffic — 82% of marketers who blog regularly see a positive return on investment (ROI) from inbound marketing.

Every digital marketing agency will provide fast results.

SEO and magical fast results are always linked together, as I explained earlier fast results are not always possible. Many agencies will guarantee fast results and believe me when I say they are almost always lying. Results when it comes to SEO cannot be guaranteed. If an agency says they can give you good rankings fast, they are probably lying. SEO takes time to develop results, so any company that promises instant results is one to shy away from choosing. An SEO company should use techniques like keyword research, link building, and creating content.

Backlinks

Backlinks are links from other sites that direct people back to your pages. Backlinks are an integral part of SEO but using them correctly is very important. Buying backlinks is considered a black hat technique. Backlinks that are not related to your content or website and are from a bad website will be very harmful to your ranking and Google’s algorithm can easily understand that your backlinks are not relevant to your content.

Some Backlink facts that you may find interesting.

They should always come from credible sites. Getting links from industry authorities is even better. You can remove bad backlinks from your profile by reaching out to the company that linked to you and asking them to remove it or by disavowing the link in Google Search Console.
